Lesbian Space Princess

In an attempt to rescue her kidnapped ex-girlfriend, the overprotected princess Saira finds herself on an inter-gay-lactic adventure. Emma Hough Hobbs and Leela Varghese won the Teddy Award in Berlin for this queer sci-fi comedy with unfiltered humour, imperfect heroines and a whole lot of heart.

After her recent breakup with the adventurous bounty hunter Kiki, the introverted Saira must leave her home planet Clitopolis for the first time to rescue her ex-girlfriend from the clutches of the Straight White Maliens. Saira launches her rescue mission, albeit with a broken heart, a cynical AI spaceship stuck in the 21st century and plenty of anxiety. The “gay pop” idol Willow joins her along the way, and together they face dangerous hazards, but the scariest thing of all is Saira’s self-doubt. Accompanied by soulful songs, camp humour and magic tricks, a shamelessly charming space adventure unfolds about queer courage and the power of self-acceptance.

“Lesbian Space Princess” is the debut feature film by Australian directing duo Emma Hough Hobbs and Leela Varghese. It was produced as part of the South Australian “Film Lab: New Voices” initiative with a production budget of roughly USD 600,000. The film celebrated its world premiere at the Berlinale 2025 and was honoured with the Teddy Award and 2nd Place for the Panorama Audience Award. The music was composed by Michael Darren, with lyrics by co-director Leela Varghese. The voices include Shabana Azeez as Saira, Gemma Chua-Tran as Willow, drag star Kween Kong as Blade and Richard Roxburgh as the cynical spaceship. A queer space adventure that meanders somewhere between Adventure Time, sci-fi and Cowboy Bebop. (Lena Metzger)
