Female+ Voices From Estonia
Strong female directors are on the rise in Estonia. However, since we cannot exist without different sexes, curator Helent Unt has expanded “Female” to “Female+”. Half of the films are debuts. A few are fairy tales, which we are in dire need of in these times of war. Within all of them lies a yearning and a determination waiting to burst, like buds in spring.

Winter in the Rainforest, Anu-Laura Tuttelberg, EE 2019_04.jpg
Winter in the Rainforest
Shot in real nature, in the tropical rainforests of Mexico and Peru, this film captures the eternal dance of life and death as experienced by magical creatures of porcelain – animals, birds, insects and flowers – fragile, yet resilient at the same time. Time passes here in a strange way, moving at an unexpected pace. The unique combination of natural light, time-lapse technique and subtle stop-motion animation creates a unique poetic reality that brings us awareness of the magic and materiality of our own living in this world. The Turnip
Based on a Slavic fairy tale, this film tells the story from the point of view of the peasants. Unlike the fairy tale, however, the film takes an underground perspective, recounting what really happened while the peasants were busy growing vegetables – and the surprise they faced at harvest time. It is a story about ownership, collaboration and betrayal. Direction Silja Saarepuu Duration 7' Country Estonia Year 2022

Maaimä (Mother Earth), Lucija Mrzljak, EE HR 2024_021.jpg
Mother Earth
“Maaimä” is a song for Mother Earth. It tells of the difficult relationship between humans and nature, comparing humans to bugs on the skin of the Earth. The song addresses topical issues such as the climate crisis, overpopulation and consumption. It was written by poet Leila Holts in one of the oldest languages in the world, Võro, thus also referring to indigenous cultures, whose peoples serve as guardians of nature in today’s world, warning us of the danger of our destructive ways.
