Arco

Arco lives in a far future and is still too young to travel back into the past as a rainbow. When he secretly tries to do so, he turns the life of Iris, who is the same age, upside down. This Annecy-award-winning science-fiction utopia by comic book author Ugo Bienvenu paints an inspirational vision of the future.

In the far future, humans have learned to travel through space and time as rainbows. Arco is one of them, but he is still too young to join his family on their expeditions. Determined to see real dinosaurs, he secretly slips into a rainbow suit one night and sets off alone on an adventurous journey to other times. Not surprisingly, his journey goes awry, and he accidentally lands in the year 2075, where he meets a lonely girl named Iris. The two quickly strike up a friendship, and Iris does everything she can to help Arco return home. Time is running out, however, because three mysterious men are hot on their heels and a huge fire threatens to cut them off from the outside world.

Director and comic book author Ugo Bienvenu has created various projects over the past 15 years, including an animated miniseries for Marvel. Now in “Arco”, his feature film debut, he also impressively demonstrates his wealth of experience. The heart-warming story is reminiscent of Spielberg’s “E.T.”, but at the same time paints an inspirational vision of the future that advocates a more careful approach to nature without moralising. The mixture of a friendship story and science-fiction adventure was well received by domestic audiences: shortly after it celebrated its premiere in Cannes, “Arco” was honoured with the Cristal at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
