Born in the Jungle
Nine-yearold Elisabeth would actually prefer to spend the summer in the city. But when her little brother disappears in the Venezuelan rainforest, she discovers a truly mystical world. Using child-friendly imagery, Edmunds Jansons tells a story of courage and a mysterious mythical creature.
Together with the rainforest’s inhabitants, Elizabeth sets out in search of her brother. Deep in the rainforest, however, they encounter a mythical furry creature that also needs their help. Inspired by Luīze Pastore’s book “The Laime Children” about the Latvian explorer Aleksandrs Laime (1911–1994), the film tells a story of courage, responsibility and acceptance.
After his short film “Guard of Honor” (2022), Edmunds Jansons returns to Fantoche with “Born in the Jungle” (2026). The international co-production by Atom Art (Latvia), Letko (Poland) and Hausboot (Czech Republic) combines cut-out and 2D animation. The characters are brought to life with vibrant colours, intricately detailed backgrounds and an expressive film score.
The fact that the voice of Elizabeth is provided by an eleven-year-old girl lends the film even greater authenticity. “Born in the Jungle” (2026) was among the feature films selected for screening this year’s Annecy Festival and celebrated its premiere in Latvia on 20 August 2026. (Julia Merz)
