All You Need Is Kill
During an alien invasion, Rita finds herself trapped in a time loop that feels like a computer game. In stark contrast to the live-action film starring Tom Cruise, the anime version of “All You Need Is Kill” focuses on the female protagonist and captivates audiences with its expressive aesthetics and bold colours.
When an extraterrestrial life form crash-lands on Earth, Rita immediately enlists in the United Defence Force (UDF) to break out of her mundane life. The alien (“Darol”) grows into a gigantic, bizarre tree in the heart of Japan, where it is closely monitored by the UDF. Exactly one year after its arrival, the otherwise peaceful Darol suddenly causes hostile plant creatures to sprout and attack the UDF workers without warning. When Rita is killed in such an attack, she wakes up again in her bed – shortly before joining the UDF – and quickly realises that she is trapped in a time loop.
Studio 4°C has become known for its expressionist animation style, as previously seen in “Tekkonkinkreet” (2006) and “ChaO” (2025). Director Kenichiro Akimoto, an industry veteran and primarily CGI director, presents a striking directorial debut here. He adapted the novel of the same name by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, which had already been adapted for the screen by Doug Liman in 2014 and released in cinemas under the title “Edge of Tomorrow”.
