Making-of: «Allah n'est past obligé»
French filmmaker Zaven Najjar took on the challenge of directing the adaptation of the novel “Allah Is Not Obliged”. His aim was, on the one hand, to highlight the terrible plight of child soldiers and, on the other, to turn the pacifist manifesto into a film that is both
sombre and funny.
After collaborating as art designer on the animated feature «The Siren», Zaven Najjar took on the challenge of directing the adaptation of Ahmadou Kourouma’s novel «Allah Is Not Obliged». What does it mean to tell turbulent and terrible periods in history visually? “I wanted to make Kourouma’s novel into an animated film, both to show the terrible fate of child soldiers and to transform this pacifist manifesto into a film that is both funny and dark.”
Zaven is a
French filmmaker, illustrator, and art director from the Armenian
diaspora of Syria and Lebanon. His work explores themes of memory,
exile, and the impact of conflict on civilian lives.
