Hola Frida
Frida is a cheerful first-grader who falls ill with polio and is ostracised by the other children. But she refuses to let this bring her down and decides to become a doctor. With a great deal of tenderness and imagination, this French-Canadian family film highlights the childhood and youth of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.
With colourful images set to poetic, playful music and a whole lot of heart, “Hola Frida” traces the childhood and teenage years of the most famous Mexican artist of the 20th century. Together with her sister Cristina, her strict mother and loving father, Frida grows up in Coyoacán, a district of Mexico City. At the age of six, she contracted polio and initially decided to become a doctor. She coped with the pain and teasing of her classmates with a vivid imagination and by escaping into a dream world that would shape her and make her the artist who would one day become world famous.
The directing duo Karine Vézina and André Kadi have adapted the children’s book “Frida, c’est moi” into this French-Canadian co-production, telling even difficult stories about illness, discrimination and the search for one’s own identity in a way that is well-suited for children. A loving homage to Frida Kahlo, recommended for children aged 6 and up. (Corinna Haag)
