Chun Tae-il: A Flame That Lives On

It’s 1964. Young Chun Tae-il arrives in Seoul and gets hired as a tailor’s assistant at the grand Pyeonghwa Market. He dreams of becoming a fully-fledged tailor to financially support his family. However, Chun Tae-il and his co-workers face drastically poor labour conditions that are slowly breaking them down.

When Tae-il learns about the Labor Standards Act, he decides to speak up, and ignites a movement for change. In 1970, the 22-year-old Chun Tae-il makes a heroic decision that engraves his name in Korean labour and unionising history.
In one interview, the director said: “Labour is life itself. Even now, 50 years after his death, we are still talking about the same story as in the era of Chun Tae-il. As time goes by, I think the workers’ rights and the work environment have improved a lot. However, there is always an unexpected shadow in society, even in this fast changing 21st century.”
