White Plastic Sky

Budapest in the year 2123: the world has become nearly uninhabitable; plants and animals are extinct. The city can only survive thanks to the great sacrifice made by its inhabitants: at the age of 50, people’s bodies become the property of the community and are used as a source of nourishment and oxygen.

Stefan accepts this harsh rule as a necessity for preserving the system – until the day his wife Nóra decides to sacrifice her body prematurely. Stefan aims to save her from this step by going against her will. Thus begins a journey with an uncertain outcome.

The film depicts a dystopian world full of secrets. At the same time, it raises important questions that are also relevant to our (still) green world: How much value does one’s own happiness have compared with the common good? And how much self-interest lies behind good intentions?

The Hungarian filmmaking duo Tibor Bánóczki and Sarolta Szabó have already collaborated successfully on “Les conquérants” (2011) and “Leftover” (2015). “White Plastic Sky” is their first feature film, made using a combination of 3D animation and rotoscoping techniques. The Hungarian acting greats Géza D. Hegedüs and István Znamenák, among others, provided the basis for the film’s lifelike characters.

The film celebrated its world premiere at the Berlinale 2023 with a screening in the Encounters Competition, which is dedicated to aesthetically and narratively daring films. At Annecy, it was nominated for the Contrechamp Award as Best Film, and it was honoured with a Special Mention in the Grand Competition Feature Film at Zagreb. (Flurin Michel)
