Tender Metalheads

Juanjo and Miquel have barely anything in common. But they soon become friends through their shared love of heavy metal. Using charming observations and minimalist images, this humorous coming-of-age story follows the boys on a nostalgic journey of growing up.

Juanjo and Miquel live in Sagrera, a working-class neighbourhood in Barcelona. Juanjo has to repeat the class and is assigned a seat next to Miquel on the first day of school. The two teenage boys couldn’t be more different. Juanjo is a rather reticent boy growing up a loving, but perhaps overly protective family. Miquel’s tough and fearless exterior belies a troubled family situation: with an absent father and a mother who is unable to look after herself, much less for her children, Miquel is forced to look after the family.

Despite their differences, Juanjo and Miquel spend more and more time together, and Juanjo soon introduces Miquel to heavy metal music. It becomes the sole language that brings Miquel and Juanjo together and creates a heartfelt bond.

The Spanish animation film by Joan Tomàs Monfort and Carlos Pérez-Reche is a story about friendship and the struggle to find your place in a hostile world when you are young and lack life experience. The film is based on the 2018 series “Heavies Tendres»”, which was conceived by Juanjo Sáez. Like the film, the series follows the somewhat autobiographical experiences of Sáez, who was also involved in shooting the film.

“Tender Metalheads” screened successfully at international festivals in 2023 and was nominated for a Contrechamp Award at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival and for Best Animated Film at DOK Leipzig. The film celebrates its Swiss premiere at Fantoche. (Martina Monzeglio)
