All we need is love
My Dog Tulip
When writer Joe R. Ackerley rescues a young German Shepherd, he has no idea that he has found the love of his life in her. Warm-hearted and melancholy, featuring British humour and sketchy drawings, “My Dog Tulip” recounts the highs and lows in the everyday life of this unlikely couple.
Although Tulip is initially hard to tame, she turns out to be more and more what Ackerley has been looking for all his life: a true and sincere friend. The story never strays into kitsch, but rather captures the amusing and tender moments just as poignantly as the mutually unreasonable demands in the relationship between dog and human. Physical needs and shortcomings of all kinds are not overlooked in the film. Producer Howard Kaminsky described the film as “… a profound and beautiful love story. It just happens to be between a man and his dog.”
The film is based on the autobiographical novel of the same name by Joe R. Ackerley and was directed by Paul and Sandra Fierlinger. It was voiced by Christopher Plummer, Isabella Rossellini and Lynn Redgrave, among others. “My Dog Tulip” was nominated for a Cristal award at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in 2009 and honoured with the Grand Prix at Animafest Zagreb in 2011.
