Mother Land
Young Krisha sets off on a quest to heal her sick mother by finding the “Lady of the Forest”, a red-eyed bear that, legend has it, possesses magical powers. The stop-motion film uses stunning visuals to depict a spiritual journey through Siberia.
The nomadic Yates people have lived in the barren tundra of Siberia for over 1,000 years. Here, the little girl Krisha and her family lead a modest but idyllic existence in harmony with nature. One winter, a seemingly incurable illness leaves her mother on the verge of death. In desperation, Krisha sets out in search of the “master of the forest”, a red-eyed bear that, according to legend, possesses magical powers. On her journey, she not only has to contend with the freezing weather, but also clashes with a hunter who has been commissioned by the government to hunt down the bear.
Inspired by classic fairy tale narratives, Korean director Park Jae-beom spent more than three years working on his first feature-length film “Mother Land”. His enormous effort is reflected in the visually stunning stop motion animation, which captures the spiritual themes of the story. Without bitterness, but rather with an understated melancholy, this deceptively simple fable paints a captivating portrait of a natural way of life that is increasingly in danger of vanishing due to modern influences.
