Mars Express
This space-noir-action-thriller tells the story of Aline, a stubborn private detective with a drinking problem, and her cyborg partner, Carlos, as they investigate the disappearance of a cybernetics student in what soon becomes a race against time across Mars.
We are in the year 2200. Life on Earth only offers humans increasingly poor living conditions, but by now they have managed to colonise Mars. Private detective Aline Ruby and her partner, an android, are hired by a wealthy businessman to track down a notorious hacker. Aline had just got her issues with alcohol consumption under control when the stress of her most recent mission made her reach for the bottle again. Her partner Carlos Rivera is a soldier killed in action who has come to terms with the fact that his human body was never found, and he is now a collection of data uploaded into a robot body. Nevertheless, he still struggles with the bitter failure of his marriage and the fact that his ex-wife refuses to allow him to see their daughter.
Human weaknesses provide the basis for this film set in a world where impoverished students rent out their brain power to “brain farms” and robots form intimate relationships with each other. At the same time, “Mars Express” offers an uncommon look at the fears of modernity – especially when it comes to artificial intelligence. When Aline and Carlos are hard on the trail of a conspiracy that leads cyborgs and humans into an inevitable conflict, they stumble upon a secret code that lurks like a time bomb in the AI’s advanced operating systems.
French director Jérémie Périn drew inspiration from the works of Brian De Palma as well as the touchstone films by Mamoru Oshii, Satoshi Kon, Yoshiaki Kawajiri and Rintaro for his science fiction thriller. “Mars Express” has already been screened in Cannes und Annecy this year and was nominated for the Cristal in Annecy.
