Look Back

Fujion and Kyomoto are complete opposites, but they find each other through their shared love of manga. Then something happens that neither of them ever expected. At Annecy this anime, which was produced by just a small team, went from insider secret to public favourite just by word of mouth.

Fujino’s manga drawings for her school’s newspaper are exceptional popular. Although she feigns modesty, she is secretly proud of her talent. Her world is upended, however, when she discovers Kyomoto’s manga – a classmate who doesn’t attend class due to social anxiety. Overwhelmed by Kyomoto’s talent and consumed with jealousy, Fujino redoubles her efforts to become better than Kyomoto.

An unexpected encounter between the two artists leads not only to a friendship, but also to a creative partnership. But a dramatic turn of events shatters Fujino’s happiness and forces her to come to terms with a new reality.

“Look Back” tells a touching story that is also visually compelling thanks to director Kiyotaka Oshiyama’s dynamic and elegant animation. In many scenes, the subtly choreographed movements of the characters afford the audience deeper insight into their inner lives than the spoken dialogue.
