Boys Go to Jupiter
While his friends are enjoying their holiday, a dim-witted teenager from Florida tries to rake in heaps of money delivering food. With warm-hearted laconicism, Julian Glander’s amusing coming-of-age story immerses us in an isometrically streamlined suburb teeming with colourful absurdities.
Billy 5000 is a smart student and yet he drops out of school, because he has set his mind on becoming rich. With the right YouTube mindset, a nifty vehicle and the Grubster delivery app in his pocket, he begins his hustle to earn his first 5,000 dollars. But it’s not that easy when you’re distracted by unmotivated friends who prefer to chill out – and a new love interest. And then there’s a little gelatinous creature that Billy has to save from the evil hands of the Dolphin Groves Juice Company!
Julian Glander, who made a name for himself with the indie game “Artsqool” transports audiences into a wonderfully colourful, surreal world full of oddities. In his debut feature film, Glander transforms settings such as abandoned swimming pools, empty beaches and petrol stations in the suburbs of Florida into magical places with colourful 3D CG animation. The spirit of the 90s collides with a dystopian capitalist zeitgeist, accompanied by dreamlike lo-fi music. The voice cast includes Julio Torres, Sarah Sherman, Joe Pera, Cole Escola and Elsie Fisher – this who’s who of quirky American comedy all-stars adds to the charmingly bizarre vibe of the film, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival Premiere.
