A Story About Fire

A monkey raised by humans traces his mother’s footsteps to a sacred mountain to uncover the secret of fire. Using traditional Chinese ink painting, Li Wenyu reimagines an archaic legend of the Qiang people in a poetic fable about the creation of humankind.

Ran Bi, a monkey raised by humans, follows in the footsteps of his mother Awubaji to the Holy Mountain to discover the secret of fire. Accompanied by his loyal wolf friend Doggie, he faces the harsh wilderness, beasts and perilous challenges. On his journey, Ran Bi learns to hunt and survive. In the end, the transformative power of fire, which represents courage, growth and the birth of civilisation, is revealed to him.

“Ran Bi Wa – A Story About Fire” is a visually stunning experience with its artistic ink animation, reminiscent of Chinese watercolours. Despite its charming appearance, the film is also dark and violent, telling a profound, primal story about courage, friendship and transformation. It blends ancient mythology with modern storytelling and is full of suspense, humour and reflection. Director Li Wenyu worked on his feature film debut for five years. Based on an ancient legend of the Qiang people, he depicts prehistoric life and tells the story of the origin of fire as a transformative miracle. The film celebrated its world premiere at the Berlinale. (Xenia Nguyen)
