The Storm

Mantou and his foster father Daguzi are searching for a legendary ship and a treasure. They soon find themselves in a conflict of mythical proportions. The visually overwhelming animated cartoon is heavily inspired by Chinese culture and deals with the topics of family and perseverance.

A sunken ship suddenly emerges from the depths in a deserted bay. It and its treasures had been dragged to the bottom of the sea many years ago by voracious dragons. The news of this mysterious return attracts all sorts of people, including the vagabond Grain and his adopted son Bun, who hope for a better life by finding the treasures. The two soon realise that the huge ship is now controlled by the dragons that are planning the rebirth of their king. As a violent storm brews over the bay, humans and monsters prepare for a decisive battle.

Thanks to his visually stunning first film “The Guardian”, director Yang Zhigang, better known as Busifan, enjoys cult status in his home country of China and is considered one of the most important representatives of the flourishing Chinese animation scene. In “The Storm”, an original blend of fantasy epic and horror story, he once again demonstrates his creativity. The film dazzles with its unusual setting, drawings reminiscent of traditional ink paintings and a colourful ensemble of enigmatic characters. In particular, the unconventional father-son duo Grain and Bun captivate the hearts of the audience in no time with their heartwarming ways. Nominated for Best Feature Film at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival 2024. (Mischa Haberthür)
