(S)KiDS
In 1993, Scotty moves with his family to the bourgeois industrial city of Edmonton. His strict father, a policeman, is determined to impose his values on his teenage son, but there is only one passion in life for Scotty: punk rock!
At his new high school, Scotty meets the outsiders Billy and Craig, who are just as obsessed with punk rock. With their anti-authoritarian attitude, the three fight not only against their parents’ lack of understanding, but also against the drug dealer Sammy and the sadistic headmaster, who harbours a dark secret. As these conflicts escalate, the friendship between the three is put to the ultimate test.
In their feature-film debut, a crazy mixture of punk rock opera and coming-of-age drama, the three Solis siblings – Louis, Leah and Leslie – combine their passion for music with memories from their own youth. The Vancouver-based rock band Rare Americans composed 23 songs within three weeks to create a rousing soundtrack. With its animation style, inspired by the music video aesthetics of the 1990s, as well as plenty of humour and heart, “(S)KiDS” celebrates resistance to authority and the yearning for freedom. Punk’s Still Not Dead! (Mischa Haberthür)
