Robot Dreams
A dog is fed up with his lonely life in New York in the 1980s. He decides to build a robot to be his friend. Together they explore the city, but unforeseen events force them to separate. This hand-drawn story about friendship and love is based on the popular graphic novel of the same name by Sara Varon.
Dog lives alone in his New York flat and longs for companionship. When he sees an advertisement for an easy-to-order friend in the form of a robot, he is thrilled and orders a model. From then on, Dog’s life is brightened by the robot’s smile and adventurous spirit. But after a day at the seaside together, the robot can no longer move. Dog rushes home to get his tools and fix it – but when he returns, the beach has been closed until the next summer season. Dog and Robot are suddenly on their own. Although Dog tries to make new friends, he eagerly awaits the reopening of the beach. And Robot also dreams of finding his way back to Dog as the changing seasons pass him by. Will the two friends ever meet again?
Director Pablo Berger tells of the universal need for friendship, as well as the ability to carry on despite the unpredictability of life. Completely free of dialogue, this very touching 2D animation film relies entirely on the facial expressions and body language of the hand-drawn figures to express their emotions and thoughts.
“Robot Dreams” is an adaption of the graphic novel of the same name by Sara Varon, and the first animated film by Spanish director Pablo Berger. It was screened at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and was honoured with the Contrechamp Award at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. (Sophie Stirnemann)
