NINA AND THE HEDGEHOG’S SECRET

Every evening, Nina’s father tells his daughter amusing stories about a hedgehog. But then her father loses his job, along with his laughter and his desire to tell stories. Nina and her best friend Mehdi hatch a plan.

Nina and Mehdi are friends and their fathers work in the same factory. Every evening, Nina’s father entertains his daughter with stories about a hedgehog that he draws for her and brings to life in a flip book. From then on, the little hedgehog accompanies Nina with irrepressible good cheer. But this childhood idyll is shattered when the two fathers lose their jobs and suddenly there is no money to repair the car they wanted to take on holiday. Nina and Mehdi are determined to help their fathers – and, of course, it is the hedgehog that gives them the idea for an adventurous plan.

“Nina and the Hedgehog’s Secret” is the third feature film collaboration between director and writer Alain Gagnol and illustrator and animator Jean-Loup Felicioli, who were nominated for a César in 2011 and an Oscar for Best Animated Feature in 2012 for “A Cat in Paris”. In their latest work, which celebrated its world premiere at Annecy in 2023, drawings are juxtaposed with computer-generated illustrations, just as the children’s light-heartedness is juxtaposed with the worries of their parents (voiced by Guillaume Canet and Audrey Tautou). The flip book that the father draws for Nina also pays homage to the Disney cartoons of the 1930s, thereby rendering the creation of animated film a theme in itself. (Philine Erni)
