Living Large

Ben loves to cook and eat. But when he hits puberty, his appearance suddenly becomes important, his weight becomes a problem and he is bullied by other kids. For Ben and his friends, their journey of self-acceptance and companionship begins – and it’s not always easy.

Benjamin simply adores cooking and eating – in fact, too much. In his school band he sings about sugared lemon cakes, chocolate muffins, hearty stews and juicy hamburgers … A dreamily colourful world into which puberty suddenly comes crashing in, creating chasms that never before existed. Whether in the family, with friends or towards his first crush: being overweight suddenly becomes a major problem overshadowing everything for Ben.

“Living Large” is based on the young adult book “La vie, en gros” by French author Mikaël Ollivier. In sculpted, partially 2D-animated, colourful images, the film tells the story of tumbling out of the world of childhood and the sudden impact of the hormone cocktail of puberty. Thus begins the long, not always easy path to self-acceptance and self-love for Ben and his friends. The delightful characters entice both children and adults to immerse themselves in this endearing story with human depth.

“Living Large” is Czech director Kristina Dufková’s first stop-motion feature film. It was nominated for the Contrechamp Award at this year’s Annecy International Animated Film Festival and honoured with the Contrechamp Jury Award. (Rachelle Furrer)
