Amélie et la métaphysique des tubes
Three-year-old Amélie believes she is a god but gradually comes to understand her place in the world. With a keen eye for detail, Maïlys Vallade and Liane-Cho Han Jin Kuang have adapted the autobiographical novel by the Belgian author Amélie Nothomb, who grew up in Japan, resulting in an emotionally captivating burst of colour.
As a newborn in Belgium, Amélie appeared to be in a prolonged vegetative coma. It is only on her second birthday, when her family moves to Japan on a diplomatic assignment, that she begins to respond to the outside world. In the months that follow, she embarks on an intense journey of discovery, learning about the colours and textures of her new home. Although Amélie grows to love Japan and feels a deep emotional bond to her housekeeper Nishio, she also has to deal with death and the embittered world of adults for the first time.
In her novel “The Character of Rain”, Belgian author Amélie Nothomb recounts her formative childhood years as the daughter of a diplomat in Japan. The episodic narrative has now been adapted into a film with stunning images by Studio Maybe Movies (already several times a guest at Fantoche with “Calamity” and “Long Way North”). The focus is not on great adventures, but on everyday impressions from a child’s perspective. “Amélie et la métaphysique des tubes” poignantly transports us back to the early phase of our lives, when every fleeting moment had something unique about it. For this creative triumph, the film was recently honoured with the Audience Award at the world’s largest animated film festival in Annecy. (Mischa Haberthür)
