Though shy, Tsubasa is equally fascinated and annoyed by his eccentric classmate Gyotaro. With shifting perspectives and subtle portrayal of characters, this featurefilm debut paints a complex picture of friends drifting apart that goes well beyond the boundaries of a classic coming-of-age story.
Gyotaro Hoshi is eccentric, hyperactive and extremely popular. In contrast, Tsubasa Goto is quiet, cautious and nearly invisible to many. Nevertheless, the two boys quickly become best friends. Together, they navigate the challenges of everyday school life, go on adventures and develop a real bond.
But Gyotaro’s hyperactive personality increasingly rubs people the wrong way and Tsubasa isn’t the only one who feels more and more alienated. It’s almost as if Gyotaro were an alien. The rift between the two grows ever wider and the older they get, the more obvious the distance becomes between the once-close friends.
What do you do when you miss the chance to make amends? “We are Aliens” strikes a chord with us precisely because so many of us recognise ourselves in the turbulent lives of Gyotaro and Tsubasa. Director and screenwriter Kohei Kadowaki’s directorial debut is no less than an emotional masterpiece.
