Son of a Bitch
In search of his father, Ismael, the son of a prostitute, crosses Brazil’s arid hinterland on foot with his three-legged dog. With stubborn characters, coarse language and a woodcutlike aesthetic, this offbeat road movie stands refreshingly apart from mainstream animation.
Because his mother is a sex worker and runs a brothel, the young Ishmael is known to the people in his village merely as the “son of a bitch”. Although he never knew his father, he learns his father’s name by chance one day and decides to set out in search of him. Accompanied by his only friend, a three-legged stray dog with a loose tongue, Ishmael heads for the nearest big city.
But the scorching heat and a series of strange encounters with outcasts turn what is supposed to be a journey of self-discovery into a nightmare, during which the pair increasingly risk losing their minds.
Four talented Brazilian filmmakers, between the ages of 26 and 70, co-directed “Son of a Bitch”: including the legendary veteran Otto Guerra and the up-and-coming young artist Erica Maradona.
Despite their different backgrounds, this cross-generational team has created a strikingly coherent work that is as much a socially critical portrait of society as it is a surreal road trip. The gritty animation style and irreverent humour ensure that, despite its sombre themes, the film never resorts to melancholy but always retains its authentic punk spirit. (Mischa Haberthür)
