Forgotten Island
With offbeat characters, outlandish ideas and karaoke, DreamWorks transports us to the Philippines of the 1990s, where Jo and Raissa dream of life on a mythical island. But when they actually get there years later, their close girlhood friendship is put to the test.
Jo and Raissa first meet at school in the Philippines in 1990 and instantly become best friends. Together they dream of the legendary island of Nakali and the demoness Manananggal, about whom Jo’s Lola (Filipino for ‘grandmother’) has told them. But when Jo learns after leaving school that Raissa is moving to the US to study, their friendship is put to the test. The two lavishly celebrate their last evening together on the beach, where suddenly a magical portal opens.
The next morning, they find themselves on Nakali. But why can’t they remember the night of partying they supposedly spent with weredog Raww? And how do they get out of here? Inspired by their own friendship, the writers Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado (“Puss in Boots: The Last Wish”) have placed the emotional power of shared memories at the heart of their original story.
As a Filipino-American, Mercado was passionate about ensuring that the film was truly rooted in Filipino culture and mythology – from the depiction of the sun to using voice actors such as Liza Soberano and H.E.R. or the Filipino studio Snipple which animated the 2D flashbacks. With “Forgotten Island”, Dreamworks puts on a spectacular display of colour with a dazzling array of supporting characters, diversions and nods to the nineties.
