Focus Austria
Austria, with its vibrant animation film scene, is this year’s guest country at the Fantoche Festival. A warm welcome!
The many facets of animation filmmaking in Austria are inextricably intertwined with movements in the visual arts, experimental film and experimental music.
Many of the artists are able to navigate these different disciplines with ease and masterfully integrate them into their works. The three short film programmes are conceived as approaches to become better acquainted with the ambiguity of surfaces and references by way of unexpected entanglements. Bodies, timelines and subject positions are all surprisingly interwoven. A convergence of techniques and processes, animated materialities, echoes and choreographies.
The programmes feature works from 1970 to 2023, collectively challenging, expanding and rejecting the linear approach and constantly creating new aesthetics. With a passion for their material, they bring socio-political issues to the screen while transcending the boundaries of cinematic space.
