Arnold, an unemployed mouse, increasingly suspects his entire world is nothing more than a stage set. Based on his short film of the same name, Alberto Velázquez has created quirky, damaged characters who are plotting their escape from this controlling, capitalist-driven construct of reality.
In a city surrounded by a gigantic forest that no one dares to cross, the omnipresent conglomerate ALMA controls the lives of its inhabitants. Also under its rule is Arnold, a mouse in an existential crisis who increasingly feels that he is being spied on by his fellow creatures. When a friend who shares this fear is torn to pieces by a giant owl and another friend ends up in prison on dubious grounds, Arnold hatches a plan to try to escape. His investigations expose him to grave danger, as sinister forces are determined to prevent him from uncovering their secrets – at any cost.
Spanish animator Alberto Vázquez, whose “Unicorn Wars” was screened at Fantoche in 2022, knows how to interweave satirical social commentary, absurd humour and animated scenes of excessive violence. His latest work, based on a short film he made in 2016, portrays a kind of nightmare version of Duckburg, where economic success is the highest virtue and reality can no longer be distinguished from fiction. In the spirit of a conspiracy thriller, we follow Arnold’s journey through this dystopian world, eerily reminiscent of our own. (Mischa Haberthür)
