International Competition 2026
The Fantoche 2026 programme was assembled in the wake of the death of Marjane Satrapi, creator of the seminal comic book “Persepolis” and co-director of the animated film adaptation.
Satrapi was a visionary artist, whose work stood against injustice and imagined a better world. We look for a similar artistic and critical boldness, unconventional perspectives and subversive humour in the animated films we select for the international competition.
The rapid advancement of technology is reflected in the expanding spectrum of artistic approaches found in this year’s submissions. At the same time, and almost at odds with this development, we noticed a rise in handmade projects and appreciation for tactile, material-based forms of filmmaking.
Selected from more than 3,000 submissions, the 39 films in this year’s International Competition showcase animation’s flourishing diversity. More than 90% of the films shown across the programmes are premieres – all of which are in qualifying positions for the Academy Awards, BAFTAs and Annie Awards. The selected films represent a broad range of international voices from all across the globe, while the directors of the films reflect a solid gender balance.
