Carmen, l'oiseau rebelle
In 1840 Seville, a street boy and a pickpocket try to save the charismatic Carmen from her foretold fate. Sébastien Laudenbach translates the plot of Bizet’s opera into a contemporary, visually stunning plea for solidarity and resistance.
Tonio is a blind knife sharpener who possesses the gift of being able to foresee the future of the blades and their owners while he works. While sharpening brigadier Don José’s dagger, he sees how the soldier will soon kill the factory worker Carmen during a bullfight. Thus begins a race against time for Tonio’s young assistant Salva and his girlfriend, the fearless pickpocket Belén, as they attempt to ward off the prophesied fate of the charismatic Carmen – who is widely loved throughout the city.
French director Sébastien Laudenbach has already delighted Fantoche audiences twice: in 2016 with his adaptation of the Grimm fairytale “La jeune fille sans mains” and in 2023 with the festival’s opening film “Chicken for Linda”. As with these two works, “Carmen, l’oiseau rebelle” is distinguished by its painterly, hand-drawn animation style: featuring fluid, sketchy strokes and aquarelle-like swathes of colour.
The film’s music draws on pieces from Bizet’s opera, reinterpreted and accompanied by a specially composed film score. Told from the perspective of the young boy Salva, “Carmen, l’oiseau rebelle” is perfectly suited for families with children aged eight and over. (Karin Dehmer)
