Blaise
When his parents air their own problems in front of the school psychologist, 16-year-old Blaise would rather vanish into the floor. Gradually, such laconic scenes build into a revealing satire on insecurity, miscommunication and botched rebellions.
Every member of the Sauvage family is struggling with their own problems and doubts, repeatedly putting the others in a tight spot. Blaise, an introverted sixteen-year-old boy with little self-confidence, is desperately looking to fit in. So passively going along with everybody else seems to him to be the most effective solution.
But this goes so far that, while accompanied by a respectable female friend, he ends up in the middle of a revolutionary demonstration. Meanwhile, his mother is frantically trying to be popular at work and suffers from not being able to express herself as she actually wishes. His father, in turn, is seeking refuge from his battered self-esteem by visiting his son’s school psychologist.
“Blaise” was directed by comic book creator Dimitri Planchon in collaboration with Jean-Paul Guigue and produced by KG Productions. The film is based on Planchon’s comic series of the same name, which he had already adapted into an animated series for ARTE in 2016.
Featuring the voices of Léa Drucker, Jacques Gamblin and Timéo Beasse, Blaise combines pointed dialogue with an unusual technique that blends cut-out, collage and photomontage. Following its world premiere in the ACID section at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, the film was honoured with the Grand Prix Contrechamp at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
